The annual Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals study, formerly the Truven Health Analytics study, incorporates independent public data, risk-adjusted and peer-reviewed methodologies, and key performance metrics to arrive at an objective analysis of the best hospitals in the nation. Hospitals do not apply for consideration, and winners do not pay to market this honor.
Watson Health has produced this study and its list of winners for more than two decades, and it has become one of the important ways the industry can measure hospital performance in the US.
The research uses a validated, national balanced scorecard that evaluates hospitals on measures of patient care and satisfaction, operational efficiency and financial stability. It compares hospitals only against similar facilities in terms of size and teaching status.
Identified annually from more than 2,700 US hospitals, our award winners continue to set standards of excellence and achieve consistent top performance — even as the industry changes and the bar is raised.
A select few of our award winners each year also earn the Everest Award. This award honors hospitals that have achieved both the highest current performance and the fastest long-term improvement over five years.
Based on our 2017 research, Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals award winners demonstrated that quality care and operational efficiency can often be achieved simultaneously, a factor that is growing in importance as value-based payment models gain momentum.
Our projections indicate that if the new national benchmarks of high performance established by our 2017 winners were achieved by all hospitals in the US, the following would be true:
This analysis is based on applying the difference between study winners and nonwinners to Medicare patient counts. If the same standards were applied to all inpatients, the impact would be even greater.
