Research Topic Areas

Drive Change.

Our innovative research and consulting services provide the assistance you need to drive important policy and operation changes in the following areas:

Research Data Development
Develop and integrate large-scale healthcare databases and other tools to support research and analysis. Current projects include the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) and the State Snapshots from the National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Reports.

Provider Quality and Efficiency Measurement
Assess provider and health plan performance with special expertise in value-driven initiatives, healthcare cost and quality measurement, and multi-stakeholder data-sharing initiatives. Examples of related projects are measuring and reporting physician performance and development of cost efficiency measures.

Health and Productivity Research
Evaluate the clinical, economic, and psychological effectiveness of prevention and treatment programs. Current projects include return-on-investment (ROI) analysis and modeling; benchmark studies using large claims databases; and investigation into the relationship between employee wellness, healthcare utilization and cost, and work-related productivity through a partnership with Emory University.

Outcomes Research
Assess treatment outcomes in defined patient populations using evidence-based research. Evaluate the clinical and economic outcomes of disease states, pharmaceutical treatments, and other interventions. Among other projects, we are currently studying the impact of policy changes and economic disincentives that drive consumption of service and conducting comparative effectiveness research.

Community Living Systems
Facilitate implementation of long-term services and supports systems that measure the quality, integrate medical and social supports, protect consumer health and safety, and use the most cost-efficient purchasing models. For example, we are currently supporting the work of the National Home and Community-Based Services Quality Enterprise (NQE), which helps address complex quality issues in long-term care rebalancing that are associated with the Money Follows the Person initiative

Behavioral Health and Quality Research
Analyze policies in two high-priority areas: the financing of treatment services for mental and substance use disorders and the quality of all types of health care. Among other projects, we are currently leading the Center for Financing Reform and Innovations for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Patient-Centered Medical Home
Design and implement patient-centered medical home models and evaluate their effectiveness in improving the quality and efficiency of patient care. For example, we are currently evaluating the effect of the advanced primary care practice model—commonly called the patient-centered medical home (PCMH)—in improving care, promoting health, and reducing the cost of care provided to Medicare beneficiaries served by Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).

Software and Database Design
Develop tools, support outcomes research, and measure project development. For example, we are currently providing technical support to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for the Healthcare.gov website and for the Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program Business Information Solutions (MACBIS) project.
