Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

Creating a national information resource of longitudinal health care data.

Challenge: Policy analysts and researchers require comprehensive and accurate data to address concerns in the US about health care access, quality, and costs. Developing the tools necessary to support this work depends on obtaining timely, detailed, and all-inclusive data - and adapting processes to meet changing needs and changes in data sources and formats.

Solution: Truven Health Analytics serves as the primary contractor to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality on HCUP. The HCUP databases bring together the data collection efforts of state-level data organizations and the Federal government to create a national information resource of patient-level health care data. Truven Health plays a pivotal role in assembling healthcare data from 47 states to create uniform data resources and tools. Furthermore, we perform critical data analyses and offer comprehensive user support to health services researchers and policy makers.

Results: HCUP databases and tools are an unparalleled portfolio of health care information serving as a unique resource for both researchers and the public. HCUP information products include databases, reports, algorithms, software, and services. These data and tools are used to address a broad range of health policy issues, including cost and quality of health services, medical practice patterns, access to health care programs, and outcomes of treatments at the national, state, and local market levels.
