Truven Health Analytics Announces Expansion of the CareNotes® System Patient Education Solution for Latin America
Ann Arbor, MI, Aug. 17, 2012 — and Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, — Truven Health Analytics, formerly the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters, today announced the expansion of the CareNotes® System patient education solution to include a total of 600 education handouts in Brazilian Portuguese. This supplements the 7, 000+ CareNotes already available in Spanish.
The expanded CareNotes offering was launched at the IV International Forum on Patient Safety, focusing on Medication Safety in Latin America. The conference takes place in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, 17 – 18th August 2012.
CareNotes helps hospitals engage and empower patients through education before, during and after their hospital stay. CareNotes handouts are fully customizable, easy-to-understand instructions covering conditions, procedures and medications. They include all common conditions and tropical diseases such as Dengue fever, Yellow fever, malaria and gastroentiritis. The medication handouts are simple, clear, easy-to-read instructions for the most frequently prescribed and over the counter medications. The solution also includes 450+ documents on frequently performed lab tests.
CareNotes handouts include color and 3D images, and are written in plain language at low literacy levels to embrace all audiences. A core set of the most commonly used documents are available in 15 languages, to support hospitals in the care of immigrant workers and visiting tourists.
Many hospitals in Latin America use CareNotes to help them achieve Joint Commission International and other national and international accreditation. When integrated into the hospital’s existing information systems, CareNotes provides an electronic audit trail to track which information has been provided to patients and their families, and when.
CareNotes forms part of the Truven Health Micromedex® Solutions which provide trusted, comprehensive clinical evidence on medication use, condition management and toxicology. More than 5, 000 hospitals and healthcare institutions in 83 countries rely on the rigorously researched, evidenced-based clinical information of Micromedex.
“CareNotes has helped our doctors and nurses enormously in educating our patients about our diagnoses. This system explains in detail all the instructions patients must follow in their treatment for a quick and healthy recovery” says Omar Garza, General Director at the Hospital Punta Pacifica in Panama. “By integrating CareNotes System within our hospital’s information systems, we are able to select a patient and produce education materials specific to his or her illness.”
“CareNotes has permitted us to provide education to our patients on how to take care of themselves and the preventative measures they can take against certain conditions. This has been a great help to the hospital in that it strengthens the relationship between the doctor, nurse and patient. For our patients, it means that they feel more content in knowing how to deal with what is affecting their health.”
Jill Sutton, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Solutions, and Fiona McNaughton, Director of Product Management at Truven Health have both been invited to speak at the IV Forum about how clinical evidence can help reduce medication errors and support patient safety in Latin America.
“Providing easy-to-understand education materials to patients and their families, that is relevant to them and in their own language increases patient compliance with followup care and safe use of thier medications. In turn this helps to reduce medication errors and hospital readmission , so improving patient safety and outcomes.” said Jill Sutton, Senior Vice President of Patient Care Solutions at Truven Health Analytics.
“Micromedex is relied upon by hospitals and healthcare insitutions around the world, ” said Thomas Hegelund, Executive Vice President for the Clinician business of Truven Health Analytics. “The expansion of our Latin American patient education offering is a further step towards making Micromedex a global resource to support patient safety.”
