Truven Health Analytics-NPR Health Poll Finds One Third of Americans Want to Require a Prescription for Minor to Get the Morning After Pill

Majority of Respondents Say Parental Permission is Necessary if No Prescription is Required

Ann Arbor, MI, Dec. 19, 2013 — One third of Americans believe women should be 18 years old before they can get the Morning After Pill without a prescription, according to the Truven Health Analytics-NPR Health Poll.

Truven Health Analytics™ and NPR conduct a monthly poll to gauge attitudes and opinions on a wide range of health issues.

The survey asked respondents to share their views on the Morning After Pill or “Plan B.” The results found that 35 percent of Americans believe that women should be required to get a prescription if they are not yet 18 years old, an opinion that was found more frequently with men than women. Seventeen percent of respondents believe all women, regardless of age, should be required to obtain a prescription in order to get the pill. Eighteen percent said there should be no age limit to get the pill without a prescription.

Two thirds (66%) of respondents believe that if no prescription is required, women under the age of 18 should need parental permission. This rate tends to decrease with increasing level of education. Overall, 85 percent of women and 78 percent of men said they were aware of the Morning After Pill, and sixty one percent of all respondents said they believe it should be covered under health insurance.

The data from the survey help us understand how consumers view the healthcare system.”

The Truven Health Analytics-NPR Health Poll is powered by the Truven Health PULSESM Healthcare Survey, the nation’s largest and longest-running independently funded, nationally representative telephone poll that collects information about health-related behaviors and attitudes and healthcare utilization from more than 100, 000 US households annually. Survey questions are developed in conjunction with NPR. The figures in this month's poll are based on 3, 008 participants interviewed from June 3-15, 2013. The margin of error is 1.8 percent.
