Truven Health Launches Analytics for HIE Utilization Evaluation and Population Health Management

Breakthrough technology facilitates deep analysis of health information exchange data to help public health officials rapidly identify health trends and improve patient outcomes

Ann Arbor, MI, Feb. 06, 2013 — Truven Health Analytics™, formerly the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters, today announced the launch of HIE Advantage℠ Analytics, a new data analytics suite designed to help public health officials access and analyze operational and clinical statistics housed within state-wide health information exchanges (HIE). The new analytics suite is currently being used in the new West Virginia Health Information Network (WVHIN) to help administrators evaluate HIE utilization. Truven Health Analytics and WVHIN successfully launched a statewide HIE in May2012.

HIE Advantage Analytics uses near real-time clinical data from healthcare providers, healthcare claims from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and other sources of information that are stored within state-wide HIE repositories. Dashboard-style reports, specialized analytic reports, and ad hoc queries are available within the suite for analyzing and displaying the data.

Douglas Shaw, senior vice president for Truven Health Analytics’ hospital business. “WVHIN is one of a handful of HIEs to go live, and with the addition of our new analytics capabilities, has more insight into the exchange activity occurring across the state.”

Among the key reporting features built into the analytics suite are the following:

  • Exchange Utilization Reporting: Quantifies clinical information exchange traffic over the network to evaluate overall use of the system to government and public funding entities.
  • Population Health Reporting: Provides timely insight into health outcomes and chronic disease management across the continuum of care, identifying areas for community health improvement.
  • Analytic Readiness: Profiles how prepared the HIE data feeds are for end-user analysis based on completeness of clinical data elements and consistency of standard clinical coding.
By implementing HIE Advantage Analytics, participating health systems will be able to monitor and advance the health status of the community while improving clinical outcomes. Targeted reports allow users to analyze prevalence, process of care, and patient outcome metrics for specific diseases such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure. Rates of screening and preventive care for the population as a whole can be used to identify communities at higher risk for poor health status and inform efforts to improve care in those areas. Users also have the ability in HIE Advantage Analytics to custom define and track unique clinical patient populations, ultimately helping them spot emerging opportunities and risks throughout a community.
