Truven Health Analytics Honors Kettering Health Network for Reducing Readmissions, Improving Care

Ann Arbor, MI, May 14, 2015 — Mike Boswood, president and CEO of Truven Health Analytics™presented the 2015 Truven Health Advantage Award for Overall Performance to Kettering Health Network, a not-for-profit, eight-hospital system in Dayton, Ohio. The award was presented on May7, 2015, during the annual Truven Health Analytics customer event, the Advantage Conference, in Boca Raton, Florida. The Advantage Awards recognize hospitals, health plans, government agencies, and employers that use data analytics to improve the quality of care and business results.

Truven Health Analytics offers a wide range of healthcare data, analytics and IT solutions – which include clinical, operational and financial performance, robust data warehousing, population health management, payment integrity analytics across the care continuum – to health plans, healthcare providers, HIT suppliers, large employers, state and federal government customers, and life sciences companies.

Kettering Health Network was honored for its innovative use of Truven Health data and analytics to resolve a care coordination challenge for many of their facilities. In 2013, patients seen across Kettering Health Network facilities spent an extra 12, 000 days in a hospital bed due to unforeseen delays in discharge. In that same year, Kettering’s flagship hospital – Kettering Medical Center – was named among the 100 Top Hospitals® in the country by Truven Health, but it was unique among the system’s facilities in achieving this pinnacle of performance. Kettering decided to leverage the 100 Top Hospitals methodology and analytic findings to determine specific process and care delivery gaps. The care coordination model was first deployed at Kettering Medical Center in July, 2014.

Using Truven Health data and analysis, under the guidance of Truven Health consulting experts, Kettering implemented a network-wide, team-based approach to transitions of care called the Kettering Care Coordination Network. The Network used predictive data to develop a stratified system that identified how likely a patient was to readmit. Kettering also proactively designed ways to resolve any barriers to patient discharge, and quickly and seamlessly coordinate delivery of patient care across all its network providers. As a result, patients in Kettering’s hospitals enjoyed a 45 percent decrease in length of stay outcomes, 17 percent lower rates of readmission, and increased patient satisfaction with discharge planning.

"The development of this care coordination model required extensive planning and collaboration, " said Mike Boswood, president and CEO of Truven Health Analytics. “Kettering used best practices and appropriate metrics to develop an innovative approach for improving the quality of patient care on an enterprise level, system-wide. We’re pleased to honor Kettering’s achievements with this award.”

“As we transition from a fee-for-service to value-based care environment, ” said Teri Sholder, Chief Quality Officer at Kettering Health Network, “we're proud to have implemented a care coordination program that not only improves the efficiency and quality of patient care delivery, but positively impacts the patient experience physician and nurse engagement, and key performance and cost metrics.”
