Gary Pickens, PhD
Vice President and Project Director, Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project
Dr. Pickens has more than 30 years of experience in health services research, informatics, and mathematical and statistical models in the fields of biology, medicine, and health care performance measurement. Dr. Pickens focuses on the use of data analytics to solve healthcare business, operational, and clinical care problems. He is also project director for the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, under a contract with Truven Health Analytics.
Prior to this, Pickens led the statistics and knowledge discovery group in the Center for Healthcare Analytics, a knowledge creation center for Truven Health Analytics. The Center’s main focus is creation of methods and analytics for healthcare performance measurement products used by Truven Health’s hospital, employer, and health plan customers. In that role, he developed statistical models for estimating cost and outcome benchmarks, modeling preventable complications of care, and forecasting demand for healthcare services. Pickens began his career in academia, teaching in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Drexel University. During his time in academia he focused on development of mathematical models for human populations and statistical consultation with a variety of investigators in biology and medicine.
Dr. Pickens holds a Ph.D. in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania; an MA in Statistics from the University of Pennsylvania; an MA in Demography from the University of Pennsylvania; and a BA in Classical Languages and Literature from the University of Kansas.
